Cancer Services for Rutherford County
RHI Legacy Foundation formed a program called Cancer Services for Rutherford County in 2014. The Foundation adopted and began expanding several community initiatives involving cancer prevention, early diagnosis, and support for cancer patients. The new Foundation used funds from the former Rutherford Hospital Foundation that had been contributed specifically for cancer programs to support those services. At the same time, Rutherford Regional Health System stated their commitment to continue Cancer Patient Navigation and the Pink Ladies Support group, so charitable donations were no longer needed to support those functions.
In early 2017, RHI Legacy Foundation entered a partnership with the Community Health Council of Rutherford County to address chronic disease initiatives through the Health Council, rather than directly through the Foundation.
Cancer Services for Rutherford County is a committee of the Community Health Council of Rutherford County. Our initiatives include:
- Assisting Rutherford County cancer patients when financial difficulties occur during cancer treatment and recovery. Typical expenses that can be considered: food and nutrition supplies, emergency housing, utilities, gas for transportation to appointments, cancer-related medications, medical equipment, and wigs, turbans, or prosthetics.
- Referring Rutherford County cancer patients to non-clinical resources, including support groups, wigs and turbans, food pantries, health insurance assistance, and additional community and regional resources.
- Planning and presenting a monthly cancer support group for survivors and patients undergoing treatment – Call 828-245-4596 Option 1 to RSVP.
- Producing and distributing screening guidelines posters to remind residents and physicians to discuss appropriate screenings for each age and gender.
- Facilitating a monthly meeting of local health organizations to oversee Cancer Services programming.
- Developing, promoting and implementing cancer screenings, prevention programs, health education, and new resources.
- Developing prevention-based social media messages and a billboard for each quarter.
- Providing an annual survivorship event.
- Serving as the contact for donors who wish to provide material and/or financial support for local cancer patients or who wish to organize fund-raising efforts for the initiatives listed above. Click the DONATE NOW button to contribute to this program.
